I am an avid Midtown Lunch reader but a downtown luncher. Its a blog dedicated to finding good grub for less than $10 and in these times – I really love reading about all the unique finds they write about. Most of the goods come from carts, aka street meat. And with all this talk about street meat lately, I’m hopping on the street meat wagon. I visit my Chiropractor once a week an always see the XPL truck with a sign that reads too good to be true.
Nothing over $5. And there is always a line. I was intrigued and decided to give them a try today. Granted I had a salad waiting for me at my desk, my coworker wanted to split something with me and I thought that for the sake of research I could have a big lunch.
This truck is located on Pearl and Water Street and operated by two men. They offer 5 or 6 things on their menu.
Chicken and rice – $5 (and other meat and rice combos for $5)
Gyro- $3 (lamb or chicken)
We decided on the lamb gyro. I was a little disappointed that for the size of the truck there was an absence of the lovely rack they slice the lamb off. Of course, that would probably make it cost more. They loaded the gyro up with lettuce, tomato, lamb and a crap load of the white sauce (which might have been tzatziki or something similar to it). We ordered two sodas to go with it and our grand total was $5 (to feed two people, sort of).
The verdict: The lamb was moist, semi chewy. Decent for $3. The sauce was a little minty but after one big sloppy bite, I was pleased with it. My coworker, who is not as picky as I am, was mad that she didnt get her own. And it was a decent size to boot. I honestly thought it would be skimpy – a healthy sized gyro for $3 measly dollars.
Would I go back? Definitely. If I needed to grab lunch on the fly for under $5 – this will surely be my choice… well – one of my choices.

I can’t eat at those places…up here they call them roach coaches! so gross.
i know Roach Coaches all too well! Unfortunately, a lot of places to eat in NYC are in roach coaches LOL. I have lived this long…
I used to get hot dogs in one of those stands when I worked in DC. Lamb gyros would have sounded good to me for lunch
I always wonder about the food in the carts! I have yet to try one but am so tempted! You might have persuaded me just now!! Can’t beat that low price!!
mmmmmmmmm, i haven’t had street food in ages!!! but it always smells soooooo good. you’ve inspired to add it to my list of foods to revisit
I actually miss street food, I used to live 20 min from NYC so I was there all the time, now I am too far. Your pictures brought back some memories. God, I sound old.
5 Star: Some Street food in NYC is top notch! Lamb Gyros are just the beginningMissy: Always ask someone who has tried a street meat first. Some of them really do suck! Tales: Glad you’re brave enough to try more street foodies! If Rachael Ray can enjoy some Street Food in Chinatown I think we are all safe with the Wall St Editions. Donna: While the Gyro tasted pretty good, I enjoyed the street fragrance much better. lol
