In just about a month… I will be turning 27 celebrating the 2nd anniversary of my 25th Birthday.
Its also Thanksgiving day.
Unsure of where I am going to be on Thanksgiving day, I have been toying with some veggie recipes so i can get a better idea of what kind of sides i want to make. I mean, lets be real here, No one wants to be a guinea pig on one of the greatest days of the year (my birthday). They want to eat the BEST dishes you got in your culinary arsenal.
On my first trip to the farmers market on “project T Day Side Dish” i found a giant bunch of brussels sprouts and some gorgeous green beans.
Brussels sprouts are like mini heads of cabbage. They taste pretty similar too. Normally, I roast them with olive oil, salt and pepper.
I took these babies off the branch they came on and sliced them in quarters. I gave them a good wash and strained them. I also chopped a butt load of onion….cause I love me some onions.
CONFESSION: Cheese eater LOATHES onions… so they go in everything now. Its like Insurance. And Every evening he comes home to the lingering aroma of onion… and whatever else i cooked.
…like these brussels sprouts (Anyone notice that they smell like fart don’t smell very awesome when they are cooking?).
Last years brussels sprouts for Turkey Day had BACON! but i wanted to try it without the bacon… it was good but dammit- bacon makes everything better! I sautéed the onions in butter for about 8 minutes and then added the brussels sprouts. I might have added more butter… salt and pepper. I sautéed on medium for 25 minutes (or until they are the desired texture).
Next batch of brussels sprouts? Definitely with Bacon…mmmm. bacon. ![]()
The Green Beans. Gorgeous. Bright green and awesome in every way. After trimming off the ends and cutting the green beans into bite sized pieces, i gave them a good washing and again cooked up some onions in butter… ![]()
I like the green beans crisp tender so these cooked for about 15 mins. I added a few tablespoons of chicken stock… salt pepper and garlic powder.
I liked the brussels sprouts better. Not to say the green beans sucked- they were good enough for my every day need for side dishes but NOT for Turkey Day.
I honest to goodness think I prefer the green bean casserole… and it totally tastes better with canned beans- Go Figure.
What sides do you cook up on Turkey Day? And can I steal your recipe?
