Okay, so my moms birthday was a few days ago… But i have been looking everywhere for the PAUSE button in life to no avail. Lots of wonderful things happening. But one of most awesome was spending my moms birthday with her.

Way back in March, mom found an amazing deal on Travel Zoo for a Mexican dinner in Tribeca. She called me to tell me about it and suggested we get the deal and use it on her birthday. I have learned to never argue with mom about saving money. So i bought the deal and we had some momma and daughter time on her birthday.

Pelea Mexicana in Tribeca is quite a large restaurant for not ever having heard of it. The reviews for the place werent that great, but i dont usually let negative reviews deter me as i like to make up my own mind. The decor is fantastic. Bright. Spacious. Great splashes of color.

And the tables werent right on top of each other. Mom and i arrived at 6 which is the beginning of dinner service. The restaurant was empty for a few other diners. Our server came right away and started us with some drinks.

Margarita. straight up. Salted rim.

Oh yeah.

They started us with some warm and crispy tortilla chips. The salsas were ridiculously hot. Much too hot to be even be tasty.

Cheers Momma! You are one hot momma! This woman has a 27 year old child and she was a grown woman when she gave birth to me. suck on that.

Our travel zoo deal entitled us to 4 drinks, 2 appetizers, and 2 entrees for $59. Which is an INSANELY good deal when you look at the menu. We decided to get the guac for 2 (that counted as one app…suh-weet!)

The guac was very good although I think mom and I liked the bowl it came in more.

The 2nd appetizer was the queso fundido. A melted cheese dip with cilantro, chorizo, and peppers. I could have eaten this with a spoon (might have) and really loved this!

Working on drink number 2.

Mom got the lamb shank.

It came with rice and beans but the lamb was COVERED in smoky adobo sauce. So much so that she was scraping sauce off of the meat just to be able to taste the lamb. She is not a lover of spicy foods so this fell a little short for her. I tasted it and thought there was way too much sauce on it as well. With lamb, you really want to be able to TASTE the lamb…. or am i just crazy?

I ordered the fish tacos that were really good… I was glad we had the appetizers because I thought this could have used a little more  to it. Maybe some vegetables. or even some rice and beans. I was definitely content and full when i finished this dish but i had also had an appetizer.

Overall, this place is decent. The service is good. The drinks are great. And the food is okay. I would probably only come back here for a happy hour but not dinner. Its way too expensive for dinner. Had it not been for the travel zoo deal we probably would not have come here.
