Restaurant week is a seasonal event in NYC where select restaurants offer prefix lunches ($29) and dinners ($42) at a fixed price in the five boroughs. It started nearly 10 years ago and has gotten so popular that the “week” usually lasts about 6 weeks; giving one ample time to get as many deals as possible. 20160731_131220

I personally like experiencing a restaurant that I would normally not visit but I also find that the experience is very different on a regular dining day then during restaurant week. Never the less, my family and I always participate.

One such place where we particularly love Restaurant Week lunches is David Burke Kitchen in Soho. There is only one thing that I actually crave here and luckily, it’s offered during restaurant week so I am one happy lady.

It was very easy to obtain a reservation for 1PM on a rainy Sunday in SoHo. My husband, parents, and I arrived hungry and ready to feast. For $29, we were entitled to an appetizer, an entrée, and a dessert. Not too shabby. We almost all ordered the same exact thing which means no tasting anything new… but when you know what you like, there isn’t really a need for all that.

I had a cup of coffee which was nice and strong- perfect little jolt!

20160731_131904For starters, everyone minus Brent ordered the plain Greek yogurt with house made granola, nuts, berries, and honey. This is no ordinary bowl of yogurt. I cannot explain why this tastes as good as it does but I have a feeling it has to be the full fat yogurt. It was tart and creamy with a hint of sweetness from the honey and berries. We scraped our bowls clean.

20160731_133235As my entrée, I ordered the burger. A huge heavy burger to go on top of the bowl of high protein yogurt I just scarfed. The burger was delicious but I barely finished half. I packed the burger and fries to go (which were perfect later that evening for dinner!).

20160731_141117Dessert was a super-rich chocolate cake. I managed half and had to give up. Being full was a major factor but the richness on top of that was just too much. I left with a lot of leftovers.

But for $29, the prix-fixe is a great bargain.

While the Restaurant Week promotion is over until Winter, the bowl of greek Yogurt at David Burke Kitchen is worth a trek to SoHo when you’re craving it!

Our neighborhood is ever-changing.

This time last year, a Spanish restaurant stood on the very corner I found myself on Sunday evening.

But now, instead of a Spanish restaurant, a burger bar is in its place.

Hello Bklyn sells burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches with a nice
selection of drinks. Their walls are decorated with all things
Brooklyn and Hip Hop; namely, Biggie Smalls. The music is old school
hip hop and R&B- 80’s babies rejoice!

20160717_193822
The space is rustic with stools and tables; large open windows, and is
in a perfect spot on the corner for a cool breeze in the summer
evening.

We started with some cocktails.
Bourbon. Cider. Deliciousness.

20160717_190550
Great summer cocktail. Don’t even know the name. Just looked at it and said yes.

Sometimes you gotta be impulsive that way.

For our entrees, we each got the Hello Bklyn Burger. A Pat La Frieda
patty cooked to a juicy medium rare with cheddar, bacon, lettuce,
tomato, and red onion on a fluffy toasted brioche bun. The burger is
JUICY and flavorful.

20160717_192324

He opted for a side of fries and I got an order
of crispy onion rings.

It was their most basic burger but it was a wonderful way to start our
love affair with Hello Bklyn. Their menu is not extensive but they
have a nice variety including non-beef options such as salmon burgers
or quinoa burgers.

20160717_192329
We will definitely be back for happy hour and hope to try all the
burgers! Why not? Its only 3 blocks away from home- oh how dangerous
this is!

Turkey Banh Mi Burgers and Asian Slaw

Having the privilege of working in the Chinatown area of Manhattan, I have access to some pretty delicious and cheap eats (when I’m not on Paleo). For a while my weekly (sometimes 3 days out of the week) obsession was grabbing a bahn mi. What’s not to love. It’s cheap (less than $5), filled with meat, pickled veggies, mayo and cilantro on a flaky baguette. Its like the best sandwich combination ever. I have even discovered a bahn mi shop across the street from my apartment that delivers and managed to get my mother and father hooked on bahn mis.

However.

Isn’t there always a “but” or “however”?

Bahn Mis can pack quite the caloric bomb. All the bread! All the unctuous meat! It adds up. So, naturally, I wanted to recreate a bahn mi type of sandwich that didn’t leave me feeling so guilty.

Does it taste just like a bahn mi? No. But its filled with great flavors that are very similar and familiar to bahn mi lovers.

IMG_0728

Turkey Bahn Mi Burgers with Asian Salad (serves 4)

For the salad:

1 cup of raw cabbage slaw

1 medium cucumber, sliced

1 Tbsp soy sauce

1 Tbsp rice wine vinegar

1 tsp sesame oil

pinch of red pepper flakes

IMG_0729

Before assembling the burgers, prepare the salad. Its best when its had a few moments to hangout. In a large bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and sesame oil. Add the cabbage and cucumbers and lightly toss; enough to get all the veggies covered. Place in the fridge while you assemble the burgers.

For the burgers:

1 lb lean ground turkey

1 Tbsp minced ginger

1 clove minced garlic

1 tsp fish sauce

2 scallions, diced

1 diced jalapeno (optional)

zest of 1 lime (optional- if you’re not into citrus)

4 English muffins

(optional: mayo)

IMG_0730

Combine the turkey, ginger, garlic, fish sauce, scallions, jalapeno and lime zest until all ingredients are well incorporated. Form into 4 equally shaped patties (I goofed and ended up with 5 unenven ones- learn from me) and place on a non stick frying pan. Cook over a medium flame for 6 minutes on one side, flip and then cook for 4-6 minutes on the other.

IMG_0731

To assemble burger, you can toast your english muffins lightly, then spread a thin layer of mayonnaise  (and siracha!), the turkey burger, some cucumbers and slaw followed by the top of the english muffin. Have some additional slaw on the side.

1 turkey burger per serving. If you are cooking for just yourself or for you and 1 other person, assemble the burgers on an as needed basis. Or freeze the extra burgers.

They taste even better the following day!

Eastwick

Lots of little gems popping up in the East Williamsburg area. Gone are the “cuchifritos” and bakeries I grew up knowing existed and in their place are spiffy new hipster restaurants. The avenue of Puerto Rico, otherwise known as Graham Avenue (Grah-Ham to the locals), is now home to several new restaurants but the one that caught my eye first was Eastwick. Eastwick. The name plays on its location of East Williamsburg and very close proximity to Bushwick.

It’s still a few months old but on a random Friday night, BR and I found ourselves absolutely sick of take out and not in the mood to cook. It didn’t take long for me to figure out where would go. We live, literally, steps away from some great establishments and we set out on a journey to feast wherever our feet took us.

Eastwick.

For a Friday evening, Eastwick was desolate. But then again, BR and I usually have dinner between 6 and 7, which according to NY standards is considered early. (if visiting NY, know the peak dinner times are between 8- 10, or what I like to call bedtime.) We grabbed a seat and were warmly greeted by the charming waitress.

Since it was technically happy hour, the special for an appetizer and drink was $9. Surely a deal that will not last long if enough people catch on- especially with the huge portions they dole out for apps! Sign me up!

IMAG1475

We started with some cocktails. Why not since they were $5, right? I had a simple Stella Artois which was refreshing on a muggy evening. BR had a unique beverage that was written in Hebrew. A licorice tasting beverage that paid homage to the jewish community. My thoughts on this drink I couldn’t pronounce? DELISH! Instantly regretted ordering a beer!

But I made a note to remember it for next time. I wanted to really enjoy the empty restaurant and decided to order an appetizer. The mac and cheese was calling my name. I asked BR to share with me… he’s not really into sharing but I ask any way because sometimes he surprises me with a yes. His only request was that we make it a large portion of mac and cheese.

IMAG1477

A short while later a giant bowl of piping hot macaroni and cheese topped with crispy bread crumbs and garlic was before us. A creamy white sauce smothered the macaroni and the herbs and spices added made this a decked out version of our favorite comfort. With the spoons they provided, we shoveled food into our mouths greedily. When the waitress came to check on her, we grunted in satisfaction.

After having that massive bowl of mac and cheese as an appetizer, that appetizer and drink special was starting to sound better and better. Note to self: Every day should have a happy hour… or any day I don’t feel like cooking.

IMAG1478

Our entrees arrived. BR kept it all American with a huge juicy burger with crispy applewood smoked bacon and sharp cheddar cheese piled on top. Alongside his burger was a mess of matchstick fries and all the fixings. He dove in and loved it. I wasn’t really in the mood for a burger but did steal some of his fries since he had so many to spare.

IMAG1479

I was too busy concentrating on the bowl of braised short ribs over mashed potatoes. This was really good, but if I am being honest, tazzina still makes braised short ribs the best. For times when I crave braised short ribs, Eastwick is a pleasant walk away from home, whereas Tazzina requires a bit more travel. Eastwick will more than suffice. The mashed potatoes were fluffy and smooth while the meat came right off the bone. Having so much macaroni and cheese to start left just enough room to finish my meal.

There was NO room for Dessert.

This place is awesome, though! Looking forward to trying everything on their menu and even visiting for Brunch !

Turkey Bacon and Cheddar Burgers with Caramelized Onions

So now that I am officially a comfy cozy girl in a healthy relationship, the boo and I stay in quite a bit. Not because we don’t want to see anyone or because we hate going out, but after a full week of work, our favorite thing to do on a friday after work is relax. And I must confess that as I get older, I find myself falling asleep earlier and earlier each night without a care. Last friday, I was asleep by 10 pm. TEN. P.M!!!! The time most young adults are on their way out for a night of fun.

I digress. After a week of clean eating and a heavy veggie and fish week, I decided to pick up some lean ground beef. I didn’t have an immediate plan for it, but having it around provided some leeway for that spontaneous moment where I could be reckless and plan dinner as I’m making it. That’s my opinion of reckless.

With a sudden leftover supply of bacon, I suddenly craved burgers.

IMG_0524

with Caramelized onions.

Bacon.

and a soft and fluffy potato bun.

IMG_0527

Ingredients: serves 4

1 lb lean ground beef

1 tsp worcestshire sauce

salt and pepper to taste

1 large spanish onion, sliced

4 slices of crispy bacon

4 oz cheese (I chose extra sharp cheddar)

IMG_0529

1.  In a large skillet, heat a tsp of oil over a medium heat. Add the onions and cook until browned or caramelized, about 8- 10 minutes. When onions are done, set aside.

2. Combine the ground beef with worcestshire sauce. Make 4, 4 oz, patties out of the beef. Sprinkle each patty with salt and pepper. Prepare a cast iron skillet with a tsp of oil. When the pan is screaming hot, place heat on lower setting. Add burgers and cook 4-5 minutes on each side, or to desired internal temps. For burgers, I like mine with a little pink inside.

IMG_0533

3.  Add cheese to cooked burger patties and assemble with onions and bacon. (also a good option: smashed avocado!)

IMG_0536

4. Affix on bun of choice (Mine is potato bun). Serve with baked fries or a healthy side salad.

A simply seasoned burger is the best burger. The addition of the sides just made this a great texture party! It was nice to change things up a bit. We tore these babies up.

It’s my favorite time of year: Restaurant Week.
Ah, Restaurant Week. It’s such a hot debate on some of the Facebook Groups that I belong to. A vast majority of “foodies” scoff at the concept of Restaurant Week altogether. They cringe at the idea of restaurants doling out bargain dinners to the average Joe and defend the hard working people in the industry who get dumped on during the bargain week.
To start, Restaurant Week is a select number of restaurants that offer a flat rate, pre-fixe, 3 course dinner. Lunch, $25. Dinner, $38. Some restaurants are really great for RW, others not so much. These anti-RW people mostly complain about not being able to experience the whole menu or even missing out on the experience of paying a month’s rent on a 3 course dinner.
But for me, Restaurant Week is a glimpse into fairy tale land where I can sit and dine in an establishment I might not otherwise afford. I am okay with admitting I am not a huge financial success, but what I have is adequate to make life livable. I can put food on the table. I can clothe myself. And sometimes, I can dine in a swanky restaurant on a budget.
Thank you Restaurant Week!

IMAG0584
Following my humbling experience at the 9/11 Memorial, BR and I made reservations at Wall Street’s Capital Grille. It wouldn’t be my first time at this Capital Grille. The first time was for a Yelp Event hosted by the Generous Pour. I fell in love with the interior of this former bank and when I saw they were among the restaurants participating in RW, I made a reservation for Lunch.
BR has a heart for finance so when he saw the interior of the Capital Grille, he immediately loved it. Not to mention, seeing that the original vault was still intact and offered the room to be rented… note for a possible party in the future after I hit the lotto.

IMAG0585
The staff here were very attentive.  Eager to take my coat, the hostess graciously hung our coats and seated us in a lush booth tucked in a corner of the restaurant with great people viewing opportunities. I was given both menus to choose from for lunch. IMAG0592

My heart was set on the RW menu so I ordered from there. The occasion called for a glass of wine. I really liked that Capital Grille had a selection of half bottles for purchase. A full bottle of wine seemed to glutinous for lunch. The half bottle of the house red, a mere $18 was a great deal. And filled our glasses just enough to quench our thirst for a little vino.

IMAG0587
The server brought over a bread basket filled with a seeded dinner roll and two crispy sesame crackers along with a pat of soft, creamy salted butter. Dieters go home.
The RW menu offered an appetizer, entrée and dessert. For my starter, I chose between a Caesar salad, mixed green salad and clam chowder. I planned to have an entrée with a salad so I opted for the clam chowder. BR ordered the Caesar.

IMAG0589
The clam chowder wasn’t overly spectacular but it was hot, creamy and had enough bits of clam in it to appease me. As far as the wow- factor, there was none. But it was cold outside. And the soup was hot and perfect for the day.  BR’s Caesar had some huge and buttery croutons that I might have reached over to taste.  A little soggy, but good.

IMAG0588
The entrée menu had a little bit of this and that to please mostly anyone. Some salmon, a burger, and a steak. I find that when dining on the pre-fixe menus, I get a thrill out of ordering a steak. The sirloin steak with an arugula salad was calling my name. BR ordered the cheese burger and truffle fries.

IMAG0593
When ordering steak, I like my steaks medium rare. I asked that the steak be prepared according to the chef’s recommendation. Lo and behold, a perfect medium rare. My darling ordered his burger medium rare as well. It was presented with an aioli, ketchup and spicy mustard. He loves mustard. I loved his aioli and saw fit to use some of it on my steak.

IMAG0595
The steak was tender with a lovely red center. It was a hefty steak for lunch so I was grateful for the salad that it came with… anything heavier and I wouldn’t have made it through the evening.
BR’s burger was flavorful! And every bite he took resulted in delectable burger juice dripping from his hands. We both loved it. And while it didn’t look so big, it was certainly filling. The truffle fries were crispy and salty with just the right amount of truffle oil. They were his first truffle fries. He liked them very much.

IMAG0597
As we felt the fullness in our bellies, the server came out with dessert. We had a choice between a flourless chocolate cake and a trio of homemade ice cream flavors.  I chose the flourless chocolate cake, BR chose the ice cream. I was too full to press on; however, after a bite of my dense and not-too- rich espresso chocolate flourless cake, I pressed on. I devoured my dessert greedily while BR ate his ice cream. I couldn’t care to try it, but he said it was delicious.

IMAG0596
When we finally had enough, our server – who was ever- attentive, gave us his card with our check. For wine, 2 three course lunches, and tax, our lunch came to $74. Considering how much we actually ate, we got a serious bargain. We tipped generously for the wonderful service and rolled ourselves out of our decadent lunch.
If you are feeling inclined, do make a reservation for RW. Treat yourself. You deserve it!

Banh Mi Style Burgers

I am kind of addicted to Banh Mi. For those that don’t know what a Banh Mi is, it’s a Vietnamese style sandwich. Working in the Chinatown area of Manhattan, I am exposed to a great many Banh Mi shops and its hard to resist the cheap but oh-so-delicious sandwich. A crisp baguette with mayonnaise, with cucumbers, pickled daikon, cilantro, a slice of pate and a choice of meat (my preference: BBQ Pork). Its quite the combination. Its also quite the calorie blast. While searching for lunch time options, I came across this Banh Mi Style Burger from the Weight Watchers Archives. I made a few tweaks based on my own tastes but kept the basics.

Ingredients:

2 spray(s) cooking spray
1 cup(s) packaged coleslaw mix (shredded cabbage and carrots)
1/4 cup(s) English cucumber(s), julienned or sliced super thin
1 Tbsp fresh lime juice, or to taste

1/4 tsp kosher salt
1 pound(s) uncooked 93% lean ground turkey
2 Tbsp cilantro, fresh, finely chopped
1 Tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
1 Tbsp ginger root, grated or finely chopped
2 clove(s) (medium) garlic clove(s), finely chopped
4 tsp reduced-calorie mayonnaise
1 tsp chili sauce, sweet variety
4 muffin(s) light English muffin, toasted

Instructions
Coat a large griddle pan, or George Foreman Grill  with cooking spray; preheat to medium-high.
IMG_9792

In a medium bowl, combine slaw mix, cucumber, lime juice and salt; toss to coat and set aside. (I mixed my cole slaw with a little mayonnaise and mango chutney. It’s the only way I like my cole slaw.)

IMG_9793
In a large bowl, combine turkey, cilantro, soy sauce, ginger and garlic; divide mixture into four balls and then gently press each one into a 4-inch patty.

IMG_9794
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise and chili sauce.
Grill until internal temperature of burgers reaches 165°F, about 4 to 5 minutes per side.

 IMG_9819
Spread half of each English muffin with 1 1/4 teaspoon chili-mayonnaise; top with a burger, a scant 1/3 cup slaw mixture and a muffin top. 1 burger per serving.

IMG_9821

I toasted the English muffin slightly to yield that crispy bite that I love so much from the classic Banh mi. The seasoning in the burger is on point and it’s a nice lunch item. A little difficult to assemble at the office but made for a great dinner, with a side of roasted kale chips. In my eagerness to devour this, I missed a few shots but rest assured, its quite unique and quite delicious.

I have a slight backlog of posts. With the move and all, I didn’t take time out to sit and document everything properly. However, that lets me play catch up now!

The last few weeks in Queens, I made simple dishes that didn’t require a lot of ingredients. I didn’t want to waste anything or have to take too much with me. The simplest, easiest thing were burgers. They are versatile. Cheap to make . Are easy to whip up. And Tasty Comfort Food!

DSC04040

Breakfast Burger (serves 4)

1 lb ground beef

1 tsp worcestshire sauce

1/8 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp onion powder

salt and pepper

4 fried eggs

4 potato burger buns

Directions: In a medium bowl, combine the ground beef with the worcestshire sauce, onion, garlic, salt and pepper until all ingredients are well incorporated. Create 4 burger patties of equal size and cook over a medium heat for 4-6 minutes on each side.

Assemble the breakfast burger by placing a slice of cheese (optional) on the bottom bun, the burger patty, fried egg and then the top bun.

DSC04043

I served mine with a side of sweet potato fries.

DSC04044

Messy.

But good.

Smile

Now, if you will excuse me, I have some more unpacking to do.

Kofta Burgers

After a recent visit to the local Mediterranean joint, I had a hankering for falafel but resisted the urge to dine out.  About 2 years ago, I made some healthy Moroccan Burgers from a Weight Watchers cook book. I remember liking them and having a good idea of what was in them so I threw a little something together. It was also inspired by this recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/kofta-kebabs/

DSC03966

Kofta Patties (makes 4 regular sized patties or 8  mini patties)

1lb ground beef

1 Tbsp Coriander

1 tsp cumin

1tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp all spice

1/4 tsp ground ginger

1/4 tsp black pepper

pinch of cayenne pepper

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp salt

Method: In a large bowl combine all of the above ingredients and fold with your bare hands. When all of the ingredients are blended well, form the meat into round patties. Since I had mini pitas, I made mini patties. I grilled them on the george foreman grill to save time. They took about 5 minutes to cook.

DSC03968

With the patties and the pita, I added a fresh spring salad and dressed it in a homemade Tahini sauce.

Tahini Sauce:

1 cup tahini (or sunflower butter)

Juice of one lemon

2 Tbsp oil

2 cloves garlic

salt

3/4 cup water

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl and whisk until ingredients are blended.

Easy Peasy.

DSC03970

I served up the mini pita with some oven baked sweet potato fries and fresh sea salt.

DSC03971

I really enjoyed these but will opt for the regular sized patties. The small ones were so good, on some days, I had two pitas for dinner.

This was a quick and very tasty meal put together in minutes.

Pork Manchego Burgers

burger, pork, recipes

I spied my roommate standing in the kitchen and making her own ground pork some months ago. It baffled me as she sat there with her chef knife and mincing pork into ground meat. The reason for this is because ground pork is kind of hard to find at our local grocery store.

Last week while on my way home from work, my train was suddenly out of service and I was left having to take an entirely new route home. On the way I saw a supermarket that I rarely frequented and remembered that I needed a few non perishables (I am trying not to buy any additional groceries due to the move). So, as always, my intention was to buy only what I needed when I passed by the butcher section.

Lo and behold.

Ground pork.

I picked it up and didn’t really have a plan other than burgers. And the boy is such a meat and potatoes guy that I thought it was perfect.

DSC03831

I had some manchego cheese and decided it would taste great in the burgers. So, I shredded the cheese. Its hard to shred such delicious cheese and not shove handfuls into my mouth…

don’t act like its just me.

So, I kind of just made this recipe up as I went along. I didn’t receive any complaints and no one died so I think we might have a winner.

DSC03832

Pork Manchego Burgers (makes 4 patties)

Ingredients:

1 lb ground pork

1/4 lb manchego cheese, shredded

1 tsp smoked paprika

handful of spanish olives stuffed with pimentos, chopped

1/4 cup breadcrumbs

salt

olive juice (optional)

Directions:

Combine the pork, cheese, paprika, breadcrumbs, olives and a pinch of salt and fold by hand. The mixture felt a little dry so I added a splash of the liquid from the jar of spanish olives.

DSC03833

Form the meat into 4 equal sized patties. As you shape the burger patties, leave a dent in the center of the burger with your thumb to allow the burger to plump without losing shape.

I used a grill pan over medium high heat and allowed each side to cook for 4-5  minutes.

DSC03834

I decided to make some sweet potato fries as well in the oven.

DSC03835

When the burgers were ready, I served them with a roasted peppper on a hamburger bun with a side of sweet potato fries.
